Review & Haul: Little Black Bag

8 May

Through the beauty forum I frequent, I recently discovered a fun little monthly service called Little Black Bag. It’s unlike any other girly subscription service I’ve tried (Jewelmint/Birchbox/MyGlam) etc. It’s a completely different concept, and once you get the hang of things, it becomes a severely addicting service.

Each bag costs $49.99 and you will receive at least three items. You are allowed to choose your first bag item from their very lengthy list of stuff. You can choose from hand bags, wallets, designer jewelry, sunglasses, makeup, household stuff, there is an abundance of options. Your next two items are automatically generated for you by Little Black Bag based on a series of profile questions you answer when you setup your account.

So you begin your bag with one item you’ve chosen and two items that were chosen for you. This is one reason why it took me SO long to sign up. I just wasn’t sold on that idea. Then I learned about the whole trading thing. Once you open your bag, you have 7 days to trade your items with other members of the Little Black Bag community. Once you get the hang of it, trading becomes a very strategic activity. I was literally glued to the website all day, every day looking at my trade offers, making trade offers, contemplating trade offers, omg. My life was taken over and it consumed my soul lol. I fell into the LBB black hole and I didn’t escape for 7 days. BUT in the end, it was completely worth it because I absolute LOVE the items that I ended up with.

My First Little Black Bag contained:

  • BCBG Floral Clutch – $78
  • Betsey Johnson Crystal Drop Earrings – $48
  • ZAD Floral Resin Bangle – $18
  • Total Bag Value: $144

So, I paid $49.90 total (used a coupon – see the end of this post for the code) and got $144 worth of stuff.

At one point, my bag contained SIX items and it was valued around $200. But I wasn’t really happy with most of it so I did a 3-item trade to get a $90 necklace, which I traded for a large hand bag, which I traded for the super gorgeous BCBG clutch that I ended up with. I wasn’t really focused on bag value, I just wanted to love my stuff.

Similar to Jewelmint and Julep, you have the ability to “skip a month” if you want. Love that! And you don’t actually get charged for your bag until your trading period ends, which is 7 days. If you aren’t happy with the items you’ve ended up with then you just shoot customer service an email within the first 5 days and you can cancel the whole thing.

There are a couple things that I’m not too happy about. One being that they charge you shipping, which is about $5. Most monthly services just charge a flat membership fee and lump in the shipping. The other thing that annoys me (but rumor is they’re working on this feature) is that you can’t request a 2 item trade if you have 1 expensive item. You can only wait for someone to offer you 2 items. For example, I had a $90 necklace that I would have loved to trade for 2 less expensive items, but I couldn’t request that because the feature doesn’t exist yet.

Aside from those two things, I really love the concept of Little Black Bag. It’s a completely new idea and the interactive element is so fun and addicting. And the fact that you can get some really great designer items for way under retail value is the best part. I’m definitely keeping my subscription!

P.S. If you’re loving the floral BCBG clutch, it’s on sale at Dillards right now for $54.60. (even on sale this clutch is worth more than what I paid for my entire bag!) and if you’re an LBB member, feel free to follow me! My profile link:

COUPON CODE: For 10% off, use code COCOKOUTURE. The website is – have fun :)

I tried using this code…and it doesn’t work. Do you have to use it if you are a first time user or can you use it if you’ve already been using it? I was looking up some reviews because so far, I’ve been really happy with my experience, but wanted to see if others had an experience other than great. Then I saw your coupon code and thought “Heck yes! Get a discount on something I love?! Yes Please!”

I’m pretty sure the code is only for first timers :( bummer! Have you tried the code ELLELBB? I believe it may be expired now, but I don’t think it was limited to first timers.

You must share your trading secrets! This is great. If I could see better how to score like you on little black bag, I might actually consider making one.
