Review: Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation

15 Jan

If you’re a QVC junkie like me, you’ve probably seen this foundation on TV a time or two. This foundation launched back in March, 2011 and it’s been a hot commodity ever since. And until last month, the only place you could even buy it was on QVC. I was very excited to learn it’s now available both on Tarte’s website and at Sephora!

EDIT 5/24/12: Click here to see my swatch comparison post of this foundation (Ivory vs. Light)

I’ve been enjoying this foundation for several months now. Since it’s starting to gain some popularity, I thought I’d do a review so you can see how well this stuff covers my blemishes.

Pardon the dirtiness of the tube. It’s been loved. I love the packaging of this foundation. It comes in a plastic squeeze tube with a screw-on top. It’s so much more sanitary and convenient than traditional glass foundation bottles.

I bought the shade “Light” which is meant for light skin with yellow undertones. My face has weird undertones… I’m more of a neutral tone, so I can usually wear both warm and cool foundation shades. This shade works well for me, but next time I’m in Sephora I want to test the “Light-Medium” shade which is meant for light skin with pink undertones.

I know the swatches look super dark and yellow against my skin in these photos, but I swatched on the bottom of my arms, which are ghostly right now. So just keep that in mind :)

It’s hard to capture the texture of this foundation in photos. It’s extremely lightweight, almost mousse-like but a bit more creamy. It blends beautifully and doesn’t feel thick or heavy on the skin even after multiple layers are applied.

Now let’s talk about coverage. Everyone has a different idea of what “full coverage” means. Even though this stuff does provide terrific coverage, I think it’s better classified as a medium to full buildable coverage foundation. If you don’t have any active breakouts, you may consider this to be perfect coverage for you. But I’m a zit face :)

I know this foundation comes with a big fancy brush (depending on where you buy it) but I HIGHLY recommend applying it with your fingers. Because of its texture, the warmth of your fingertips will allow this foundation to melt right into your skin. At the very least, apply your first layer with your fingers, and you can go over trouble spots with a foundation or concealer brush. I typically apply two layers to my cheeks because I have active breakouts and some old scarring to cover up.

This is my BARE face. I’m only wearing eye makeup.

See the gorgeous breakouts and scarring I have going on? Aren’t you jealous? :P

Here is my face AFTER applying the Tarte foundation.

It does a pretty decent job. The redness in my cheeks is neutralized, my pores look less visible and my breakouts are definitely muted down. After this step, I like to dab on a little Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer and my acne will be completely covered.

This foundation claims to give you 12 hours of flawless coverage. I guess that could hold true if you don’t have an oily T-zone and if you’re not one to touch your face throughout the day. I’m always scratching my nose/chin/etc, and I have combo skin, so this foundation does move a bit towards the end of the day. Setting it with a silica powder definitely helps it last.

I also want to point out one amazing thing about this foundation – NO caking! I have a serious issue with foundations making me cakey and this stuff doesn’t. Even after multiple layers, it’s so lightweight that you can barely feel it on the skin.

Would I repurchase? YES!

You can purchase this foundation on QVC for $34.56 (INCLUDES BRUSH! Plus $4.47 s/h and tax if applicable) , Online or in stores at Sephora for $38, or Tarte’s website for $38 (free shipping over $40).

Disclaimer: This product was purchased by me with my own money. All of my reviews are 100% honest :)

Thanks for the review! I saw this on sephoras website and went to look for more reviews on blogs. I too have lots of acne scars on my cheeks/chin area so it was nice to see you review about how well the coverage for acne/scarring. This will def be on my next list to try out. I’m currently using MUFE HD. Nothing wrong with it but it’s always nice to try something new – especially if it’s better, why not? :)

No problem! I’m glad you found me :) I think you’ll love this foundation. I definitey prefer this finish over the MUFE HD finish (it’s a bit too dewy for me).

Thank you for this review. I have lots of acne scars and it was so helpful to see before and after shots. Right now I have been using lancome teint idole but its very drying and it makes me break out. I also hate the chemical sunscreen lancome uses. Going to order this from sephora!
