Review: e.l.f. Mineral Personal Blend Foundation Quad

22 Jun

I have been loving ELF’s Studio line lately. This newly launched mineral foundation quad caught my eye a couple weeks ago, so I decided to give her a whirl. I haven’t been huge on mineral foundations for a couple years now (mainly because they’re messy and inconvenient), but since it’s summertime, I figured my face would appreciate it if I layed off the heavier products for awhile.

Here is what Elf’s website says:

Create customized mineral based color for a perfect match, year-round! Housed in a unique quad chamber for the perfect mix, the weightless mineral formulation blends seamlessly into skin and contains natural skin protecting SPF 15 and is 100% mineral based with no parabens, preservatives or chemical dyes. Infused with key Vitamin E for rich antioxidants that hydrate and replenish the skin. The inner dial allows you to control the amount of product dispensed so you can create your customized color and keep the powder closed for clean and easy use everytime.

My color choice was: “Light: Porcelain, Fair, Light, Beige”

Let’s take a look at the product shall we?

The concept of this product is good. Package four shades of the same family together, let the user “customize” their shade. I like the IDEA of this packaging, however, it was not executed well at all. The sifter is a straight-up pain in the ass to deal with. The foundation just trickles out of the tiny holes (each shade has 7 designated small holes) which frankly just don’t do the job. I had to tap tap tap tap tap tap like crazy to get the amount of product out that I wanted. And as you can see in the photo above, the top plastic peice of the sifter tends to “trap” foundation underneath it, so beware.

You’re not going to want to tap this into a lid at first. Practice on a paper plate a few times so you can decide how much of each shade suits your skintone the best. Example below:

Here is a close-up of all four shades. I labeled them P for Porcelain, B for Beige.. you get the idea.

And then I just used a Bare Escentuals brush to swirl it all together:

Now despite the sub-par packaging, I am actually really loving the foundation itself. Like most other mineral foundations, the coverage is very buildable. I was able to cover up some pretty gross/dark hyperpigmentation on my forehead with this foundation. Take a look at my before and after:

Before:

After:

I *obviously* need to work on blending it into my hairline better LOL but look at how well it covered! I was very impressed. If you can actually manage to get the foundation out of it’s jar, you will probably love it too :)

This looks like a cool product! It’s probably cheap, being elf, so it might be worth a try!

I also struggled with the sifter holes – am now depotting it. only 2 of them are wearable for me :S, Porcelain and Fair – rest too dark. I should stick to the Fair concealer – it’s the fairest e.l.f. offers at this point.

Try using tape to cover the ones you don’t need to come out :)
