Top 5 Beauty Discoveries of 2011

15 Dec

As 2011 shortly comes to a close, I thought I would wrap up my first year of beauty blogging by creating a top 5 list of my favorite beauty related purchases of 2011. When I started this website back in January, I didn’t think photographing, reviewing and swatching dozens of different products would become such a fun and obsessive hobby. I’ve enjoyed every little bit of it!

My Top 5 Beauty Discoveries of 2011:

1. Origins VitaZing! I posted a review of this product back in August and I’m still using it daily. I have really grown to love it as a moisturizer and as a solid base for my foundation. Whether it’s mineral, liquid, mousse or BB Cream – I will always have my VitaZing underneath it. It gives my pasty complexion a very natural hint of color and hydrates my combo skin like a dream.

2. Birchbox! It really is the little things in life that make me the happiest. Waiting for my adorable little box of assorted beauty goodies  each month just makes me so obnoxiously giddy.  I love the anticipation of receiving my Birchbox. Sure, they have good months and they have bad months. But I am always excited to receive and explore my Birchbox! I’ve blogged every single one of my Birchbox shipments – you can view them all here.

3. St. Tropez Tan Applicator Mitt! 2011 was the first year that I really divulged myself into the world of self tanner. I tried sprays, mists, lotions, creams but everything would streak and leave my palms orange. The instructions on all of the tanning products say to wash your hands after application, but then I would be left with white hands and tan arms, wtf?! During a Sephora Haul in July, I discovered this little gem. It’s just a simple little porous  glove that you use to evenly distribute your tanning product onto your skin. Your palms are left tanner-free!! I use it with my tanning mist and lotions and couldn’t be happier with it. I can apply my tanner to the TOPS of my hands while wearing the glove so I don’t have to walk around with white hands or orange palms. Did I mention it’s only $6?

4. MAC Mineralize SkinFinish Natural in Light Plus! I have always had a love/hate relationship with face powder. My skin is just… difficult to deal with. I have uneven skin tone, acne scarring, oily T-zone and ginormous pores. Every powder I was using to set my foundation just seemed to cake horribly or leave a chalky finish to my skin. MAC MSFN is seriously the only powder I will ever use again for the rest of my life. I apply it with my flat-top ELF brush and it just melts into my skin. Whether I’m setting liquid foundation or coating it over my mineral foundation, it leaves such a natural finish you can’t even tell I’m wearing a powder.

5. Smashbox Photo Op Mega Palette! This one is a more recent discovery, but definitely one of the best! I bought this palette during a QVC Today’s Special Value in November and was VERY much on the fence. After some arm twisting by my fellow beauty junky friend Karen, I gave into the temptation :) This baby is jam packed with quality cosmetics! 56 eye shadows, brow powder and wax, eye liners, blushes, highlighters, and lip glosses all geniusly labeled and tri-folded into a gorgeous red case. You can drool over my photos and review here.

And that wraps up my list :) Do you own any of these products? What would your top 5 be? Let me know in the comments!

LOL that doesn’t surprise me in the slightest! We are beauty product twins who were seperated at birth. Let me know how you like the MAC MSFN!

Awesome list! My skin is just like yours with the pores, and the scarring, and the uneven tone (getting better, though!) and I used to have some of the MAC MSF Natural. Unfortunately, the shade the MAC girl matched me to was way too dark, so I ended up giving it away. But, I did really like it a lot!
